Seeing the Bible Afresh
LETTER BY BRIAN MORYKON
Sitting behind a screen for so many hours sometimes I forget: you’re a person. Not an “email subscriber” or “website user,” but an unceasing being made in the image of God. I’m thinking of Steve, T.J., Linda, and so many others who blessed me with their presence last week at the pastor’s conference.
Perhaps like some at the conference, you find yourself worn out in your work. Our prayer is that Jesus will refresh you, strengthen you, and teach you his “unforced rhythms of grace” (Matt 11:28 MSG).
The Spiritual Disciplines, remember, are meant to bring us into that rhythm, not burden us with more to do. There are ways to practice disciplines — like study — that are destructive and ways that are life-giving. Richard Foster provides direction on Bible study to keep us from “starving to death in the presence of its spiritual feast.”
Next week there will be no digest as the Renovaré Ministry Team meets together for our annual retreat. For some, it will mark 30 years of doing this — Renovaré’s core group comprised of all ages, denominations, and backgrounds who gather to listen, pray, laugh, worship, remember, look forward, and spur one another on toward love.
In Christ,
Brian Morykon
