Anxiety and Spiritual Formation
LETTER BY BRIAN MORYKON
On May 24, 2003, philosopher and distinguished professor J.P. Moreland awoke at 2:30 in the morning dripping with sweat, heart pounding, body pulsing with adrenaline and electricity. He was having a severe panic attack.
Seven long months later, with help from therapy, medicine, friends, Bible reading, and prayer, the anxiety and depression lifted. He was broken and changed by the experience but still felt relatively normal for the next ten years.
Then during a particularly stressful year, panic struck again, leading to another five months of severe anxiety and depression.
This time, sensing God’s invitation to a learning pilgrimage, he devoured dozens of books on anxiety and spiritual formation, and prayerfully put into practice what he learned. Gradually, new habits of thinking took hold. He discovered it takes time and intentionality to “cast all your anxiety on God” (1 Pet 5).
Moreland talks about his journey on the Renovaré Podcast this week, and in his book, Finding Quiet.
I think anyone who struggles with anxiety will be deeply encouraged by his story and the solutions he discovered. I know I am.an
