How Do We Wait for the Already Come?

LETTER BY BRIAN MORYKON

I am working on a simple practice. Upon awakening and before arising in the morning, I whisper an acknowledgment of God’s presence (“The Lord is here”) and spend a couple minutes imagining a scene from the gospels. Some mornings this comes easily. Some mornings it is like pushing a boulder up a mountain. Either way, the reality is unchanged: God is present and the Stories are True.

To worship God is to come into agreement with reality. You’d think reality would be obvious, but it is often hidden. We see this in Jesus: God came in a way that could be missed or mistaken.

Advent is a season to wait and watch. But how do we wait for Jesus who has already come? Trevor Hudson points us to Mary:

From the moment the angel leaves her, she knows that Jesus lives inside her. But, she still has to wait. He is there, and yet he is still not there… He comes to her from within her. Like Mary, we wait for Jesus who is already present within and around us to be birthed into our lives.”

Watching and waiting,

Brian Morykon
