Everyone Continually Worships
LETTER BY BRIAN MORYKON
Intentional or not, toward Jesus or away from Jesus, everyone undergoes spiritual formation. Likewise, theistic or atheistic, conscious or unconscious, everyone worships— continually.
In Unceasing Worship, Harold Best defines worship as “the continuous outpouring of all that I am, all that I do and all that I can ever become in light of a chosen or choosing god.”
Richard Foster says simply that “worship is our human response to God’s divine initiative.”
It’s fitting that worship is our focus this month, for there is no greater divine initiative than God’s personally dwelling among us. As the Message puts John 1:14, “The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood.”
“Advent is a time to wake up,” Trevor Hudson says. So this month may the scales of familiarity fall off our eyes and the wonder of the incarnation dawn on us afresh. When that happens our worship can’t help but flow to its proper place.
With anticipation,
