A Clarification + A Teachable Moment
LETTER BY BRIAN MORYKON
A thoughtful reader emailed us and kindly expressed concerns about last week’s digest introduction, especially the subject line, “The Upgrade to Holy Spirit.”
“I think it is a mistake for us to call one person of the Godhead more desirable or more ‘current’ (i.e. ‘upgrade’) than another. The Father, the Son, the Spirit are co-equal.”
The reader’s comments remind me of the importance of words, especially our words about God. The point above is well taken. Though not the intent, the word “upgrade” could hint at a kind of hierarchy in the Trinity or modalism, both of which are contrary to Scripture and to what Renovaré believes. (This week’s digest features articles that cover Renovaré’s core beliefs and ideas. Also see Chris Hall’s online course on the Trinity.)
I sent the reader’s email to Chris Hall, resident theologian and president of Renovaré, and we talked it over. How I wish all theological conversations (and conversations with leadership) could be filled with such gentleness and grace. Chris told me he didn’t care for the word “upgrade” either in this context.
“Should I address it publicly?”
“No,” he said, then paused as an idea lighted his face. “You know,” he beamed back with childlike enthusiasm, “this could be a teachable moment for our Renovaré family. Go ahead and address it in the next digest.”
No anger. No shaming. No anxious rushing to respond. Just gentle course correction. I’m thankful for his grace and for yours as we learn together how to follow and speak about God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Yours in Christ,
