Plumbing Theology

LETTER BY BRIAN MORYKON

In hearing sermons across many denominations, artist Makoto Fujimura found that we tend depict the gospel as a message of God fixes things.’”

Eden broke; God’s fixing it. We broke; God’s fixing us.

Fujimura calls this plumbing theology.” It’s not that it’s bad, it’s just incomplete. And he invites us to something more:

God does not just mend, repair, and restore; God renews and generates, transcending our expectations of even what we desire, beyond what we dare to ask or imagine.”

In other words, New Creation.

The gift of art is to help us move beyond utility and into beauty. It gives us a glimpse of the coming New Creation and in some senses pulls it into the present.

This Tuesday, February 9 at 1pm ET, Makoto Fujimura, along with Renovaré board member and interior designer Margaret Campbell, join Carolyn Arends for a free webinar titled Art + Faith”. We’d love for you to join us. Register here.
