He Had Everything and Possessed Nothing
LETTER BY BRIAN MORYKON
A.W. Tozer gives astounding insight into the familiar story of Abraham and Isaac. What was asked of the aging patriarch wasn’t a cruel test by an insecure God. It was a command of love to save both Abraham and Isaac from distorted affections. Abraham would thereafter be a rich man who possessed nothing but God.
A time may come where we are given an enormous test of our allegiance. Most of our days though are made up of a thousand ordinary moments, moments we get to ignore God or, as Nate and Richard Foster talk about in the podcast, orient our hearts toward him.
When I was younger I tried to stay close to God out of obligation and fear of punishment. The older I get the more I’m convinced that abundant life is found nowhere else than in God’s presence made available in Jesus. And practicing his presence is the heart of Christian simplicity.
