Freedom from Needing My Own Way
LETTER BY BRIAN MORYKON
Can you believe Richard Foster’s Celebration of Discipline turns forty this year? Directly or indirectly, that book is why you’re reading this. It fed a hunger in many hearts and it sparked the birth of Renovaré.
To celebrate the anniversary, Nathan and Richard Foster are doing ten one-night events and two conferences, and our web content will focus on one discipline per month.
One thing must be said at the start of this celebration: Spiritual Disciplines are not the point. The point is to glorify and enjoy God. Disciplines earn nothing — we are saved and sustained by grace — but they do provide helpful ways to present our bodies as living sacrifices. And it’s on that alter where God transforms our hearts and minds.
We’ll begin with Submission, placing God’s will above our own. It’s a term with some baggage, so this week’s content helps unpack it.
