Finding Freedom from Constant Comparison

LETTER BY BRIAN MORYKON

Blindspots. We all have them. But, of course, they’re invisible to us. It’s usually someone else’s observation that brings self-awareness — if we’re willing to see. Self-awareness at its best leads to surrender to God and grace-empowered change.

On the podcast this week, Renovaré Ministry Team member Richella Parham recalls her journey toward freedom in the area of constant comparison. It began with her husband’s observation: Richella, you’ve created for yourself a Mythical Composite Woman made up of the outstanding attributes of others and that’s who you think you’re supposed to be.”

Once she recognized herself in the comment, Richella began cooperating with the Holy Spirit in gaining freedom over this joy-robbing habit. That process is captured in her new book Mythical Me. (The featured article this week comes from the book.)

Our focus this month is the Word-Centered Life. Freedom comes as our minds align with the truth of God, found most richly in written form in Holy Scripture.

cDallas Willard compiled a list of Scriptures that reveal the truth of God’s nearness. In it is a helpful word from Hebrews for overcoming comparison and other destructive habits: Be content with what you have; for he has said, I will never leave you or forsake you.’ ”
