When it comes to growing our faith, Eugene Peterson says that the Psalms are the best tools available.”

Regularly praying through the biblical psalms is transformational, but our bond with God also depends on using our own words.

That’s why I’m excited to announce a new Renovaré resource for renewal. Unearthing the Heart: Simple Tools for Soul Deep Prayers is now available as a free download.

It’s a workbook designed to help you discover what you didn’t even know you had to say, to move past surface‑y prayer and get real with God.

Using the biblical psalms as a model, this booklet offers two stepped-out exercises for digging into your unique circumstances and writing your own psalm-style prayers — one of thanksgiving and one of lament.

Psalms are poetry, but don’t let that intimidate you. Crafting psalms isn’t just for writers.” The treasure we are after is honesty and soul-deep connection, not a fancy finished product.

Whether you are brand new to praying or well-seasoned in a conversational life with God, you can pick up these psalm-crafting tools to bring more of yourself into the loving light of God.

WORTH QUOTING

All who have walked with God have viewed prayer as the main business of their lives.”

Sometimes our prayers are shallow and lifeless because we aren’t digging deep into our experiences and feelings. Excavating our day-to-day lives and looking with God at what we find there yields the treasure of a deep and authentic conversation with the Lord.

TO PONDER

Unearthing the Heart will help you to craft your own psalm of thanksgiving (a wonderful practice for this time of year!). To prepare for that exercise, ponder a time when…

You felt peace that couldn’t be explained
You experienced wonder or beauty
Jesus healed or changed you
A burden was lifted
