Why We Can Believe Him
LETTER BY BRIAN MORYKON
Dear friends,
If Jesus hadn’t suffered I wouldn’t believe him.
If he had flown away before the whip, the spit, the crown, the cross — if on his way up, scarless in the sky, he pronounced, “Peace I leave with you” — his words would now ring hollow.
It is the wounds of Christ that give the words of Christ authority.
Without the wounds of Christ, this week’s theme — safety in God and peace beyond circumstance — is only an ill-timed platitude in a time of tragedy.
But he did suffer. He bore our sorrow, and I’m quite sure bears it still. He retained the scars in his hands so that when he gestures the sign of peace to each of us and says, “Do not let your hearts be troubled,” we can believe him.
