Racism and the Law of Love
LETTER BY BRIAN MORYKON
My friend Lisa Koons, a black woman and leader in a Christian organization, has been writing helpful race-related posts on Facebook. She’s kind but pulls no punches, so there’s often significant pushback. (If you’ve ever read Facebook comments, you know they aren’t always a shining example of humanity at its best.)
Her recent post is inspiring and humbling:
“Every other week I collect the emails and comments of those who vehemently disagree with my posts about racism and coherently listed why, and on a dedicated day, I unpack them before the Lord in a blood-boiling, pride-slaying time of reflection, prayer and invitation for God to open my eyes to whatever is true.”
This is a heart posture that allows for inner transformation: a posture of inviting God to bring us into alignment with what is true, even if the messenger is less than kind.
Also offering us help in the area of racial justice is Myisha Cunningham, a pastor and long-time friend of Nathan Foster. On the Renovaré Podcast this week, she reminds us not to get stuck “theologizing” but rather to take concrete, small steps toward love (have a listen to hear some examples).
